THE LOSS OF COMRADES

The following article was written in late 1996 to early 1997 by Roy Tapping who was a Stoker on the J34 and has been published in many local papers around the UK and overseas. At the time, Roy sought to commemorate the loss of nine of his shipmates and has been the driving force behind the commissioning of a plaque to their memory.

The plaque was dedicated on Sunday 3rd May 1998 in the Royal Chapel of St. Katherine in the Royal Citadel Plymouth and now hangs in St. Nicholas' church, HMS Drake, Devonport, as a permanent memorial to those who gave their lives.

QUOTE

Three days after the end of World War Two on May 11th 1945, the Ninth Minesweeping Flotilla including HMS Tenby was engaged in clearing minefields around the Norwegian coast, when one of the crew, J.L.BLACKMAN lost his life.

Seven months later on December 16th 1945, and still clearing minefields, we returned to Devonport Harbour and anchored in the Hamoaze. That evening our motor boat was taking some liberty men ashore and due to the foundering of the motor boat, we lost another eight young sailors. Only one managed to swim ashore.

On 50th anniversary in 1995 they were remembered at a service in the Church of St. Nicholas at HMS Drake, Devonport and also at St. James Church at Swansea.

Over the past few months, we of the HMS Tenby Association have been seeking permission to place in St. Nicholas Church Devonport, a memorial plaque for the nine who gave their lives in May and December 1945. We now have the approval from the Chaplain of the Fleet and the brass plaque will be on display at our reunion at the Trecarn Hotel, Babbacombe, Torquay, Devon on May 3 and will be handed over to the Church of St. Nicholas at HMS Drake on Sunday May 4, 1997.

This information is for relatives, ex shipmates from the J34, ships company of the post war Frigate F65. In fact, anyone who is interested.
